What is the course about?

In this course we will be examining the fundamentals of topological modelling in Autodesk’s Maya. The course will involve a heavy focus on the work of Antoni Gaudi, and how we might represent his work as 3D geometries in Maya.

This course is perfect for beginners of Maya, and is designed to provide a precedent focused learning outcome instead of a technical understanding of Maya.

We will begin by examining some of the tools available to us in Maya, and proceeds into an in depth look at how to recreate the forms of Antoni Gaudi

What will you learn in each video?

Polygonal modelling is a type of modelling by which the geometry of different objects are approximated by breaking their surfaces into smaller parts using polygon meshes. In this lesson we will discuss an overview of polygonal modelling, and how it is a powerful tool for us to use in Maya.

In this tutorial we will examine the Maya interface, discuss the navigation tools and create our first polygonal mesh geometries.

In this lesson we will examine some of the incredible geometries from Gaudi’s Casa Mila roofscape, in particular the collection of patterned mask geometries. We will be exploring a few additional tools in Maya, including copying tools, transformation option tools, edge creation and creasing. These tools will give us greater control over our topologies in Maya.

In this lesson we will examine Gaudi’s mask balconies on the façade of the Casa Batllo. In particular we will focus on modelling from a single surface plane in Maya, cross referencing our topology against an image in our viewport and exploring the power of the mirror tool in Maya.

In this next set of lessons, we will apply what we have learned in the previous videos to model this complex façade chunk of Gaudi’s Casa Comalat. We will break this model down into smaller sections and tackle each part one at a time. In this particular lesson we will create one of the column geometries we see in the centre of the bay.

In this lesson, we continue modelling the façade chunk of Gaudi’s Casa Comalat. In particular, we will be focusing on the grill and bay window part of the façade.

In this lesson, we continue modelling the façade chunk of Gaudi’s Casa Comalat. In particular, we will be focusing on the swirl geometries on the outside parts of the façade.

In this lesson, we will continue modelling the façade chunk of Gaudi’s Casa Comalat. In particular, we will be focusing on the leg geometries at the bottom of the façade.

In this lesson, we will finalize our modelling of the façade chunk of Gaudi’s Casa Comalat. We will be adding the final ornamental trinkets, including the crown at the top and the two swirls at the base of the façade bay.
