This course will introduce you to foundational concepts and techniques which are integral when it comes to building custom Revit families. Aimed at beginners, this introductory course will give you the skills and confidence to create your own Revit families for use in your own architectural projects.
In this course we will learn how to model a furniture family using Revits family editor by following the Bones, Muscle, Skin analogy.
Before jumping into Revit’s family editor, it’s important to develop a strategy for how to build a family. In this lesson, we will trace a series of diagrams to plan the bones, muscles and skin of the family.
This lesson will explain how to setup the ‘bones’ for your Revit family, and will explore the setup of reference planes, dimensions (& dimension locks), and the pin command.
This lesson will explain how to add the ‘skin’ to your Revit family by adding modelling elements such as extrusions. We will also explore the difference between a parametric and non-parametric family.
Families can be nested inside other families with their own parameters. This lesson will explore the concept of nested families with a practical demonstration using our created family.
Parametric arrays give users greater control over the number of elements in a parametric family. This lesson will explore how to create a parametric array inside our nested family.
Once you have created a family, you are able to load it into a Revit project. This lesson will explain how to load in a custom family, and how to use the project browser to edit its parameters.
What are the learning objectives for the course?
Understand the core concepts that define what a Revit family is.
Demonstrate an understanding of how to navigate the Revit Family Editor user interface.
Understand how to setup constraints, add modelling elements and enable parameters in a Revit Family.
Have the ability to load custom made families into a Revit model.
Demonstrate an understanding of nested families and parametric arrays.
